Towing With a Motorhome

One of the perks of having a motorhome is that because they have their own engines, you can tow other vehicles with it! This is especially convenient for when you want to run errands around the town, but don't feel like having to struggle to find a parking space big enough for your rig or want to see a tourist attraction that is too narrow for your motorhome to make it through. Bretz RV and Marine created this short article to help you feel ready to tow your vehicle with your Class A motorhome.

Before You Tow

There are several weights you need to check before you try to tow another vehicle with your motorhome: the curb weight (full weight of the vehicle unloaded), the max gross trailer weight (weight the hitch can handle), the gross vehicle weight rating (max weight with supplies and people the RV can handle), and the gross combined weight rating (max weight of the RV and towed vehicle). It's very important to keep your RV weights within the perspective limits so you don't cause damage to you or your vehicle.

Ways to Tow

Once you've figured out the maximum weights you're allowed to have, you have to decide how you would like to tow your spare vehicle. There are several different options at different price points, but ultimately you have to decide what you're most comfortable with.

Tow Dollies

Tow dollies are small two-wheeled trailers. Your spare vehicle's front tires rest on the tow dolly. Tow dollies are versatile in the way that they can be used by anyone and are relatively easy to operate. Turning and braking are a little more difficult.

Tow Bars

Tow bars require a professional to install a towing plate on the towed vehicle and can only be used on a manual or four-wheel drive car. Once they're installed they are quick and easy to use.

Enclosed and Flatbed Trailers

Although this is the heaviest and most expensive option, trailers provide the most versatility. You can tow many different things including ATV's and UTV's. You also won't have to make any alterations to the vehicle you intend to tow.

Motor homes are growing increasingly popular as time goes on. There are a few clear reasons for this. They offer a unique way to get around, where you don't necessarily have to leave the comforts of home behind. This makes them an ideal choice for many, whether you're a family wanting to go on a long road trip or someone who wants to live life on the road.

If you're looking to get yourself a motor home, there are a few things you'll want to consider before you make your decision. One of those factors is the type of motor home to get. Below, we'll highlight Class A motor homes, which are some of the most popular, including their features and how they compare to other classes.

What Is a Class A Motor Home?

There are three classes when it comes to motor homes, which determine their size and layout. Class A motor homes are some of the largest you'll find on the road today. With a Class A motor home, you're getting one that's built on a heavy-duty frame, allowing it to be a larger size. In fact, these frames are very similar to the ones you'd find on a big 18-wheeler truck.

Those seeking the maximum amount of space within their motor home or who want a more luxurious experience typically go for a Class A motor home. These are the motor homes with the most residential-like features, allowing owners the comforts of home while they're on the road.

What Are the Benefits of a Class A Motor Home?

Choosing a Class A motor home, rather than a Class B or C motor home, comes with several distinct benefits.

Spacious Interiors

For starters, Class A motor homes typically offer the most spacious interiors. Many Class A motor homes come with kitchen and living room areas along with separate areas for sleeping. You'll also have enough room to walk around inside easily, so you can stretch your legs while someone else is driving.

Some of these motor homes can even sleep up to 10 people comfortably, making them great for when you have a large travel group. If you're looking for a motor home where you won't feel cramped while you're on the road, a Class A motor home is typically your best option.

Luxury Features

In addition to the extra space, Class A motor homes often have the best luxury features available. Because of the heavy-duty frame and larger size, Class A motor homes are able to accommodate more features, giving you plenty of options for how you want to set up your motor home. For example, you can find Class A motor homes with a kitchen, shower, washer and dryer, and refrigerator. Some Class A motor homes are even large enough that you can have two bathrooms. Other features you might find include:

  • Heated floors.
  • Electric window shades.
  • Granite countertops.
  • Multiple slide-outs.
  • Induction cooktops.

Two Fuel Options

Next, there are two primary fuel options for Class A motor homes. You can find Class A motor homes that run either on regular gas or diesel gas. So, you can decide if you want the performance benefits of diesel gas or the cost-savings of regular gas before purchasing your motor home. This differs from the other class options for motor homes, which typically only come with one fuel option.

Ample Storage Space

Finally, Class A motor homes offer not only ample interior space for passengers but also plenty of cargo space. Exterior storage is a huge factor when determining which motor home you buy, as you'll want enough space to comfortably store all the things you'll need while on the road without taking up interior space.

With Class A motor homes, you'll find huge pass-through compartments that can accommodate larger items, such as large suitcases, furniture, and even cooking grills. If you don't want to leave anything essential behind on your next road trip, you should strongly consider getting a Class A motor home for its ample storage space.

Class B and Class C Motor Homes

If you're not sure if a Class A motor home is right for you, you may want to explore either Class B or Class C motor homes. Class B motor homes are the smallest of the group. In fact, these vehicles look more like vans and are often called van conversions or camper vans. However, unlike your typical vans, Class B motor homes are constructed a little taller so that you have room to stand up when you're inside.

Interior space isn't as ample as in Class A motor homes, but you'll still find basic amenities such as a kitchen area, bathroom, and living space. These spaces are just smaller than those found in Class A vehicles. The benefits of getting a smaller motor home include a lower initial cost, plus they're more fuel efficient. So, if you're someone who doesn't need a lot of interior or cargo space, you may be perfectly comfortable inside a Class B motor home and can take advantage of the cost savings.

The other option is a Class C motor home. These fall somewhere in between Class A and Class B motor homes in terms of size. These midsize vehicles are most known for their over-the-cab sleeping area. This is an additional sleeping area that allows most Class C motor homes to sleep between four to eight people.

With a Class C motor home, you can also typically tow around a smaller vehicle, which is perfect for when you want to run errands in an area or tour without having to drive around your large motor home. Finally, just as Class C motor homes come in between A and B in terms of size, they also fall in between in terms of cost.
