This creates an overlap between the two parts of the towing unit, which gives you more stability and control even on windy roads. However, this does require you a tow vehicle with particular attributes. That open bed is essential, so for many, the easiest route is to just get a pickup. Make sure your pickup can accommodate the extra weight, which might mean more than a half-ton truck.
